Main identification features
  • dorsal fin origin behind pectoral base
  • d: vii strong, low spines, highest in center
  • pelvic behind pectoral base


Body moderately elongate, slightly compressed; snout blunt; mouth large; eye large; opercle thin, with 2 flat spines; preopercle margin with fine teeth; 1 dorsal fin, origin behind pectoral base; anal origin under ~mid dorsal; pectoral long; pelvic much smaller than pectoral, inserted behind base of pectoral, connected by membrane to belly, can fold into groove on belly; tail forked; scales small, smooth, easily shed; head scaleless.

This genus includes 5 southern temperate species from the eastern and the western Pacific; one eastern Pacific species enters the southern limits of our region.
