Main identification features
|
SOLES Soles have their eyes on the right side; the margin of the preoperculum is completely concealed under skin; their dorsal and anal fins are free from the tail (in the eastern Pacific representative); the pelvic fins are not joined to the anal fin; there are no pectoral fins in the eastern Pacific species; the lateral line is straight and unbranched. This family, which contains over 27 genera and about 106 species worldwide in tropical to temperate areas, has a single representative of a Pacific genus in the tropical eastern Pacific.
