Main identification features
  • oblong, compressed
  • dorsal fin y a: no finlets behind
  • inside mouth white
  • pectoral greater than head
  • straight part ll: small spines
URASPIS

JACKS

Elongate, moderately compressed; tongue, roof and floor of mouth white; small scales over most of body, operculum partly scaled; spiny dorsal low, height < eye height; poorly developed scutes (hard, spiny scales) on straight part of lateral line; no finlets behind dorsal and anal fins.

A circumtropical genus with 2-3 species; 1 circumtropical species in our region.
