Overview
Main identification features
  • head profile very steep;eye: top 1/2 head
  • oblong, very compressed
  • dorsal fin ix spines evenly spaced
  • ll: 2 sections
XYRICHTYS

RAZORFISHES

Head and body strongly compressed; head profile steep (up to ~70 degrees), with a fleshy longitudinal keel at front; eye on upper 1/2 of head; dorsal fin continuous, with IX spines that are regularly spaced; lateral line in 2 sections; lower jaw without rear canine tooth; head scaleless except for few scales below eye.

A tropical to warm temperate genus found throughout the Pacific and in the Atlantic; with about 16 species; 6 species (2 undescribed) known in and endemic to our region.
