Xyrichtys species B

An unidentified species known only from photographs of live specimens in the field, and distinguished from other eastern Pacific species by its color:

Initial Phase: head and body pale cream, darker above; cheeks and operculum pearly white; a broad mid- brown midlateral stripe from behind the eye to just above the center of the base of the tail fin; 5 indistinct dark bars above this stripe, between nape and end of dorsal fin; dorsal fin translucent with a brown cast (which may extend onto the top of the back), paling towards the rear; tail translucent with a brownish tinge, anal and pelvic fins cream, pectorals clear; iris yellowish-cream with a thin orange ring.

Terminal phase: midbrown body, with darker spots on scales forming lines along body; head midbrown, paler around snout, mouth, rear of preoperculum and upper edge of operculum, iris with orange ring; dorsal and anal fins dark translucent brown; tail with dark brown base, paling to rear.

Size: not known.

Habitat: sandy and rubble bottoms.

Depth: 5-30 m.

Known only from photographs taken at Socorro Island in the Revillagigedos Islands by D Gotshall.

Abundance: Common.
Cites: Not listed.
Climate Zone: Northern Tropical (Mexican Province to Nicaragua + Revillagigedos).
Depth Range Max: 30 m.
Depth Range Min: 5 m.
Diet: mobile benthic worms; mobile benthic crustacea (shrimps/crabs); mobile benthic gastropods/bivalves; zooplankton; pelagic fish eggs.
Eastern Pacific Range: Northern limit=20; Southern limit=19; Western limit=-115; Eastern limit=-111; Latitudinal range=1; Longitudinal range=4.
Egg Type: Pelagic; Pelagic larva.
Feeding Group: Carnivore; Planktivore.
