Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory
Gunnison County, Colorado
38.958056° -106.985°

Overview

Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory's (RMBL's) mission is to advance the deep scientific understanding of nature that promotes informed stewardship of the Earth. The Lab is a summer community of scholars and students. Students interact with leading scientists and there is lively exchange of information, ideas, tools, and perspectives. Much of the land around Gothic and in the Gunnison Basin is in public ownership as national forest. The Lab's relatively undisturbed and rugged location at 9500 feet, make it an ideal setting for studying a wide variety of organisms and habitats. From Gothic, researchers can hike to sagebrush scrub, meadows, aspen and conifer forests, alpine tundra, streams, lakes, ponds, and changing elevation gradients. A wide range of research is underway during the summer at the Lab. Most field research is done close enough to Gothic that scientists can return to the Lab daily. They stay in rustic cabins, enjoy our dining hall, and have access to our library and computers.
