Cabin Cove
Haywood County, North Carolina

Overview

Cabin Cove is a private property of about 100 acres in a remote cove just outside the northeastern corner of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It contains a diverse set of habitats from young regenerating hardwood forest and white pine plantation to rich old-growth pockets in deep north-facing ravines and steep mesic hardwood slopes. This diversity of habitat and proximity to the pristine forests of Cataloochee Valley that have never been logged may account for an apparently greater-than-average diversity in plants and lichens.

In June 2010, Cabin Cove joined Discover LIfe to build customized identification guides to the sites's vascular plants, and start monitoring the site's moths, wildflowers, and lichens through photography. Cabin Cove is one of the first sites in Discover Life's network of field sites to predict and manage the impacts of climate change, invasive species, and pollution on species and their interactions.
