Highlands Biological Station
Macon County, North Carolina
35.0543° -83.1888°

Overview

Highlands Biological Station is a year-round biological field station located on a high plateau in the southern Appalachian Mountains of southwestern North Carolina. Its principal mission is to promote research and education in biodiversity studies (ecology, systematics, evolution, and conservation), with special emphasis on the diverse flora and fauna of the region. It is a center of the University of North Carolina system, but is also supported in part by a consortium of colleges and universities, as well as by the Highlands Biological Foundation.

In May 2010, HBS joined Discover Life to train local staff and volunteers, build customized identification guides to the site's vascular plants, and start monitoring the site's moths, wildflowers, and lichens through photography. HBS is one of the first sites in Discover Life's network of field sites to predict and manage the impacts of climate change, invasive species, and pollution on species and their interactions. Please join us.
