Black Rock Forest Consortium
Orange County, New York
41.3916° -74.0291°

Overview

Black Rock Forest Consortium is a natural living laboratory for field-based research and education. Located in the Hudson Highlands, 50 miles north of New York City, the 3830-acre Forest encompasses native terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems now increasingly rare in the region. It features dramatic topography with more than 1000 feet of relief and numerous lakes and streams, and retains high habitat and species diversity. It is operated by a Consortium of 21 colleges, universities, public and independent schools, and other scientific and cultural institutions. The Consortium's 9000 square foot Center for Science and Education contains dry and wet laboratories for research and college and university use, a K-12 classroom and laboratory area, lecture and computer/office areas, and a library/meeting center. The adjacent Solar Pavilion provides a protected outdoor learning and gathering space. The 9000 square foot Forest Lodge can accommodate up to 60 overnight visitors, and another 15 can be lodged in the Old Headquarters Building. The Forest Lodge also includes a Commons that can hold up to 65 people for dining and 140 people for lectures.
