how we build them

Overview -- As part of Save all species, we are building and sharing species checklists from sites and regions around the world. Please see checklists for our rationale of why. Here we seek your help and give you technical details of what to do.



Sources of information -- Discover Life has the means to process checklists from various sources, whether published or unpublished, online or not. Because lists of species are not protected under U.S. copyright, we can legally present them online, even when we may not present the original copyrighted documents without permission.

Media
We have the technical means and experience to process rapidly and accurately information from various digital and non-digital media, including many file types (notably pdf, html, xml, csv, doc, and txt formats), scanned images (e.g., jpg, tif and png formats), spreadsheets and databases (e.g., Excel), and paper copy reports.

Standardizing species names
Discover Life's existing tools provide us a rapid means to extract, check, and standardize scientific names from various They use Discover Life's existing authority files to over 1.3 million recognized species and the distributional information that we have on more than 700,000.

Taxonomic groups
We are collect information on all species, in order to compare communities across sites and monitor disturbance, we are particularly interested in completing checklists for the following groups: vertebrates, vascular plants, moths and butterflies, bees, ants, aquatic insects, and mollusks.
