General Information

The genus Banchus is found in open shrubby country, varying from fields to open woods. The usual hosts are moderately large lepidopterous larvae on trees or shrubs, or near the soil surface. Most species are flying in spring or the first half of summer. The females fly characteristically low while the males fly higher and faster. No species is known to have more than one generation per season. Banchus cocoons are elongate elliptic, dense, and blackish. The body is moderately stout with front wings measuring 7.7 to 12.0 mm long. "Upper tooth of the mandible is much wider and longer than the lower pointed tooth and labium is not elongate"(Townes & Townes, 1978).
