Peter,

Obviously there is much here to digest (especially for a taxonomist with
limited formal ecological background)!

One quick thought (to be sure I understand): Do you agree that the "grain"
size will be different for each species, even within the same group? For
example on a spatial scale, when light trapping for insects, the different
species come to the light (are captured/observed) from different distances
(or not at all). Therefore, a smaller number of light traps would be
needed to capture those species that come to traps from great distances, a
larger number for the others. Furthermore, several methods of capture will
be needed to observe species of the same group responding to the different
methods with different grain sizes. Probably the implications of these
grain-size ideas will need to be explored by the various TWIGS.

I general I find myself agreeing with your concept; working out the details
will be fascinating!

I haven't yet been told a meeting time or place in September, but will
certainly give your outline more thought as that opportunity approaches.

John
