Jeanie Discover Life in America Monthly Report January, 2001 Jeanie Hilten Contacts and Communications * Spoke with Jean Bushyhead of the Cherokee Language Project about Chuck Parker's ideas for student participation in ATBI. * Revised ATBI brochure sent to Twin Creeks staff for proofreading. Then back to Coralie at NHA for printing. Funds from Sorting Center allocated monies. * Winter issue of the ATBI Quarterly went to press Jan. 22--3500 copies printed. To be delivered to Matrixx mail service Tuesday, Jan. 30 for bulk mailing: 1586 on the mailing list, which includes media and political officials. Thanks, Ruthanne and all contributors! * Received word that US Postal Service has approved our permit for bulk mailings (newsletter) at the low non-profit rate. * Attended "Discovery Center" exhibit opening at Oconoluftee Visitor Center. (Park Service display showcasing ATBI work and park biodiversity). * Updated Board member and TWIG lists. Send changes to webmaster Cassie at UGA. * Attended Park Partners meeting at Headquarters-Friends, NHA, Tremont, NPS, DLIA. Science/ATBI * Vertebrate study monies disbursed for partial reimbursement of fish parasite work done by Dr. Joseph Camp. * Discussed June 28-July 1 "Beetle Blitz" with Twin Creeks staff and volunteer Tom Rogers, who will help coordinate the effort. * To Cades Cove and Goshen Prong ATBI plots with Ian to learn more about the instrumented plots and possibilities of volunteer help with maintaining them. * Sent out notices to potential applicants about the 2001 Mini-Grant program--$50,000 this year from Friends and NHA. * Spoke with Keith Langdon about DLIA involvement with long term tree/shrub/vine range mapping project. Housing * With help of volunteer Marion Schlauch, did "Deep Cleaning Day" for Cosby house January 24, including steam cleaning carpet. Contacted Joe Suttles, NPS North District maintenance about water leaks in kitchen and bathroom and they were promptly repaired. Thank you! * Considering how to manage increasing ATBI housing needs for 2001 season; spoke with Park, Tremont, and Friends about possibilities. Suggestions welcome! * Updated housing calendar. Sent "person/nights" to the Park. Volunteers * Discussed possible ATBI volunteer projects for 2001 with Keith Langdon, Becky Nichols, and Chuck Parker. * Began planning for Volunteer Training Day Saturday, March 10, to be led by DLIA, Park and UT staff and volunteer coordinators Tom Rogers, Kevin Fitz Patrick and others as team leaders for projects. Event will be held in the morning at Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont with field sessions in the afternoon at Twin Creeks. Please contact Jeanie if you would like to participate. * Contacted volunteer Jim Burbank for work with Dana Soehn on Cades Cove insect sample processing. * Obtained ATBI conference slides and photos from volunteers Kevin Fitz Patrick and Kemp Davis. Financial * Received notice from the Internal Revenue Service that DLIA has been granted federal tax exemption status. All right! * Met with Charles Maynard and George Ivey to develop DLIA 2001 budget, including funds for hiring a fundraiser. Budget sent to Board for comments, revised and re-sent. Awaiting responses for final approval. * Wrote checks for phone, electric, office support, and housing. * Filed year 2000 budget records. Education * Attended Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont's strategic planning meeting in Maryville to contribute thoughts on interactions between Tremont's environmental education programs and the ATBI. * Attended planning meeting in Gatlinburg for proposed Biodiversity Museum with the aim of highlighting ATBI and generating funding for it. Office/Clerical * Updated spreadsheets for budget and Vertebrate Study funds allocation * Updated DLIA mailing list. * Met with Al Collazos, Information and Business Services, to arrange import of web-site records to a usable format for DLIA mailing list in FileMaker Pro. * Prepared draft of Notebook for Board Members. Sent to Frank Harris for review. Publicity * Arranging second order of DLIA T-shirts to have ready for Volunteer Day and for 2001 research season. Will also have some mouse pads and mugs. Thanks to the Natural History Association for supporting this. * Prepared press release on Volunteer Day and sent to Park staff for OK. * Contacted James Kiser, Appalachian Technical Services, about the excellent posters they developed and produced with support of various partners, including a Kentucky utility company. Will investigate Keith's suggestion of posters for ATBI promotional and educational use. Planning and Up-Coming Concerns * Need to confer and make decisions relative to web site records access system and how to coordinate DLIA web registrations with DLIA office needs. * Volunteer training. * Educational programs and outreach. * More ATBI housing? How to clean and maintain properly. * TWIG leader roles for 2001 research year. * Need for committees to meet and finalize plans. (See list of Board members and committees) * Advertise for and hire fund-raiser. * On-going planning for 2001 research season needs: housing, volunteers, education, publicity, mini-grants, other funding of scientists and TWIG coordinators, grants and scholarships.
