 Contacts and Communications

 * Set March meeting with Jean Bushyhead of the Cherokee Language Project
to discuss Chuck Parker's ideas for student participation in ATBI and web
page development.
 * Revised ATBI brochure has been returned to Coralie and sent to the
printer.  Will be ready by end of month. 5,000 copies, approximately $1700.
 * Delivered more winter ATBI Quarterlies to Park Headquarters and to
Great Smoky Mountains Institute for teacher weekend.  (We printed extra,
so anyone attending a conference, please take some along!  Contact Jeanie.)
 * Sent current (5/00) DLIA Science Plan to Cassie for uploading on the web.
 * Met with Betty Morgan at the Glenstone Lodge to set dates for 2001 ATBI
Annual Conference: we blocked out Wed, November 28-Saturday, December 1,
2001. Mark your calendars!  (I'll send out an e-mail note) Need to decide
whether to have the main part of the conference on Thursday and Friday,
with a Board meeting Wednesday, or Friday and Saturday, with a Board
meeting Thursday.
 * Printed DLIA mailing list for Keith Langdon's Twin Creeks use.  Still
need updates and more information imported into FileMaker Pro from the web
site.

 Science/ATBI

 * Sent out replies to inquiries about June 28-July 1 "Beetle Blitz".
 Spoke with Tom Rogers, and Twin Creeks staff about our next steps.
 * Received copies of Mini-Grant proposals sent to John Morse by Feb. 15
deadline.
 * Met with Keith Langdon and Richard Shultz about long term tree
distribution mapping project and needs for computer hardware, software,
and participation by trained volunteers and educators.
 * Accompanied Elizabeth Skillen in the field to see her wasp study plots.
 * Attended Inventory and Monitoring meeting at Twin Creeks.  Gave update
of current DLIA activities.

 Housing

 * Updated housing calendar. Sent "person/nights" to the Park.
 * Visited both Cades Cove and Cosby house; left "check-in/check/out"
forms, sink drains for CC, newsletter copies, and housing policies.
Installed new furnace filters.
 * Discussed and investigated other housing and sorting center options
with Keith, Becky, and Chuck.

 Volunteers

 * Continued planning for Volunteer Training Day Saturday, March 10, to be
led by DLIA, Park, USGS, and UT staff and volunteer coordinators Tom
Rogers, Kevin Fitz Patrick, Judy Dulin and others as team leaders for
projects. Event will be held in the morning at Great Smoky Mountains
Institute at Tremont with field sessions in the afternoon at Twin Creeks.
 Please contact Jeanie if you would like to participate.  34 people
registered as of 2/28/01.
 * Volunteers Jim Burbank and Mary Williams are working with Dana Soehn on
Cades Cove insect sample processing.
 * Obtained ATBI conference video from volunteer coordinator Kevin Fitz
Patrick.
 * Developed Plant Study/ATBI Volunteer hours and dollar value spreadsheet
for Keith Langdon to use in his proposal for funds from NPS.


 Financial

 * 2001 DLIA Budget reviewed by Board and approved.
 * Updated spreadsheets for monthly income/expenses.
 * Wrote checks for phone, electric, office support, and housing.
 * Investigated grant prospects for computers and software. Sent note to
George Ivey.

 Education

 * Attended planning meeting in Gatlinburg with BEV team for proposed
Discover Life in the Smokies Biodiversity Museum. The purpose of the
center will be to showcase ATBI and to generating long term funding for it.
 * Met with Judy Dulin to write draft Presentation about the museum
project to use when speaking to community groups.
 * Met with Twin Creeks and Park Resource Education staff to develop
recommendations for the above ATBI Museum-what should be exhibited and
how.  Compiled notes of their suggestions.  For more information about
this project, contact Mary Phillips, mar2draw4you@earthlink.net  Judy
Dulin, dulinj@ten-nash.ten.k12.tn.us  or Kent Cave, kent_cave@nps.gov.
 * Made plans with Ken Voorhis and Paul Super to lead ATBI programs for
Great Smoky Mountains Institute this spring and summer.

 Office/Clerical

 * Updated DLIA mailing list.
 * With help of Beth Buchannan, re-organized Horse Barn office to allow
better workspace, shelves, storage, and desk room for all.
 * Installed 4-port hub for the Imac and sent second superdisk drive to
the sorting center.

 Publicity
 * Picked up second order of DLIA T-shirts, mouse pads, and coffee mugs
from "Over Your Head Productions" to have ready for Volunteer Day and for
2001 research season.
 * Sent information about ATBI publicity to NPS's Bob Miller for inquiries
he has received.

 Planning and Up-Coming Concerns

 * Need to confer and make decisions relative to web site records access
system and how to coordinate DLIA web registrations with DLIA office
needs. This is quite urgent!
 * Award Mini-Grants for 2001 by April 1.
 * Continue plans for on-going volunteer training and supervision.
 * Conduct educational programs and outreach-spring and summer work with
Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont and other groups and schools.
 * More ATBI housing?  How to clean and maintain properly?
 * TWIG leader roles for 2001 research year.
 * Beetle Blitz June 28-July 1, 2001.
 * Need for DLIA Board Committees to meet and finalize plans. (See list of
Board members and committees)  Draft reports by May 18 Board meeting.
 * Continue to advertise for and then interview and hire fund-raiser. Very
important!
 * On-going planning for 2001 research season needs: housing, volunteers,
education, publicity, mini-grants, other funding of scientists and TWIG
coordinators, grants and scholarships.
