Greetings!

The 2001 All Taxa Biodiversity Annual Conference of Discover Life in America will take place at the Glenstone Lodge in Gatlinburg, Tennessee November 28-December 1. We invite your participation in this special gathering. There have been many accomplishments over the past year - new species discoveries, increased financial support, volunteer action, exciting prospects for science education, and a new NPS Science Center, to mention a few! Don't miss this opportunity to join together to share knowledge, ideas, and visions for the future.

Enclosed is an Agenda, and below is information about the goals of the conference, and specifics about accommodations, travel, and registration. Note that our volunteer photographers are hosting a Photo Workshop on Wednesday, November 28, with classes, guest presenters, and field trips into the Park. Contact Kevin FitzPatrick at 828-526-0272 or media3@gte.net to register.

The goals of our meeting are to:

Please tell them that you are with Discover Life in America for the ATBI Conference. Glenstone Lodge has again graciously provided us with meeting rooms at no charge.

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION

Please R.S.V.P. to Jeanie Hilten (jeanie@discoverlife.org) or phone (# 865-430-4752) no later than Friday, November 16, 2001. Let me know when and how you will arrive and leave so that we can better plan our logistics. Visit here for registration and information for the 2001 program.

We offer this conference at no charge, but are glad to accept contributions to help defray expenses. This year we are planning a special event on Thursday evening. After our social reception, there will be a "Biodiversity Auction" to raise funds for our annual DLIA Mini-Grant Program for ATBI research. We ask that you bring something to donate to the Auction that represents either you institution or your area of research. For more details about this event, contact Emily Jones, Discover Life's Development Coordinator, at 865-453-2428, or fotsej@icx.net.

LODGING, TRAVEL & FOOD SUBSIDIES

We have limited funds to cover the costs of this meeting and are asking those of you who have grants, travel budgets, and who can otherwise afford it to cover your own expenses. For those on very limited budgets, we have some funds to cover your lodging, travel and food. In addition, there will be space at the Cosby house and the Cades Cove house, each of which will accommodate 6-8 people. We may also be able to arrange lodging with some of our volunteer Hosts, in local homes. These spaces will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Contact Jeanie Hilten.

If you need maps, directions, or any other travel information, please let us know. Call the Glenstone Lodge and they can send you a nice brochure. You might want to plan to explore the Smokies before or after the conference. November can be a wonderful, less crowded time to hike the trails and ramble the scenic byways.

We are looking forward to your participation as we come together for inspiration, learning, and fellowship!
