Greetings, ATBI Volunteer--

As Discover Life in America plans for the 2001 field season of All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory work in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, we are recruiting interested people with the time, energy and desire to help us. Volunteers can be involved in many phases of the project, from assisting scientists in the field to education, photography, web page construction, computer and office assistance, range mapping, and ATBI plot tasks. There are many exciting opportunities to learn about the remarkable forms of life in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and to use your particular skills to enable this ambitious project to move forward.

Discover Life in America is hosting a Volunteer Training Day Saturday, March 10, 2001. You are invited to join us for a day of learning, fun and camaraderie, beginning at 9:00am at Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont followed by afternoon field sessions at Twin Creeks Natural Resource Center and other locations in the Park.

Park staff and fellow volunteers will provide orientation to the Smokies and the ATBI, as well as training in specimen collection and processing, data management, photography, GPS, and other skills. There will be time get to know each other and share our knowledge and interests. While we plan to involve participants of all ages in our work, this particular meeting will be geared towards folks from high school age up.

Just bring a lunch, water, comfortable, shoes or boots and something on which to jot down fascinating facts and figures! If you wish to attend, please RSVP to me by March 1 so we can plan accordingly. We look forward to seeing you!
