PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
  • 1981-present, University of New Hampshire, Professor and Curator of Zoology since 1995.
    • Research on systematics of world Pselaphidae and Anthicidae.
    • Faunal studies of insects of New Hampshire with special reference to the forest litter fauna and the influence of major disturbances such as logging on these groups.
    • Insect fauna of old-growth forests; emphasis on biodiversity inventories of unique or natural areas in state.
    • Identification and keys to aquatic stream insects for use in water quality monitoring.
    • Curated and identified following groups in collection: Orthoptera, all families; Dermaptera, all families; Hemiptera, 15 families; Coleoptera, 35 families; Diptera, 20 families; plus sorting all incoming insect adults and larvae to family.
    • Initiated database of northern New England arthropods based on specimens in UNH collection, with lists and records available to interested groups.
    • Identifier and chair for Arthropod Identification Center, University of New Hampshire, receive all specimens that extension personnel cannot identify, and ensure development of collection to cover economic groups; developed forms and database for recording identification information since 1986.

    • Directed operation of substation and zone operators responsible for control of mosquitos in urban and agricultural areas.
    • In charge of introduction of biological control agents, and in conducting pesticide training safety and arbovirus surveillance.
  • l978. Office of Endangered Species, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Sacramento. Entomologist.
    • Reported on population densities and habitat of the possible threatened or endangered species, Anthicus sacramento Chandler (Coleoptera: Anthicidae).
  • l976-l977. Bureau of Land Management, Safford, Arizona. Entomologist.
    • Determined the impact of grazing on insect populations and species, and prepared an inventory of the insect species encountered within the district.
  • l975-l976. The Ohio State University. Research Associate.
    • Assisted the curator and curated portions of the insect collection.
  • l972-1973. University of Arizona. Field Technician.
    • Assisted in survey of parasites of Arizona cotton pests.
    • Curated portions of the parasitic Hymenoptera collection and developed identification keys for certain of the families.
    • Developed sampling techniques for arthropods in ironwood litter and boring in plants.

    • Evolutionary processes at the micro- and macroevolutionary levels. Co-taught with J. F. Burger. Taught every other year after Fall 1998.
  • *Biology and Biodiversity of Insects (ZOOL 745/845). University of New Hampshire. Every Fall starting 2003.
    • Aspects of insect physiology, behavior, morphology, medical importance of interest. Lab deals with biodiversity of insects in different habitats, including recognition of species, comparisons of trapping techniques, and characterizations of faunas based on biologies.

    • Occasionally offered to students interested in various aspects of insect biology or diversity.
