TEACHING, POSTGRADUATE SUPERVISION AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

Fifty-four students have been awarded a PhD or M.Phil under my supervision. The completion rates of these students is much shorter than the average for the Science Faculty. It should be noted that the students have come from a wide range of backgrounds and countries make supervision more challenging. These students all have positions in Mycology, including Australia (3), Botswana (1), Canada (1), China (5), Figi (1), Hong Kong (13), India (2), Korea (1), Mauritius (1), New Zealand (1), Philippines (4), Singapore (1), Thailand (6), USA (2) and Vietnam (1).

TEACHING
(1994-present)

I teach a full complement of courses and have a teaching qualification, a Post Graduate Certificate of Education. I am very conscientious in my teaching and have obtained grant awards to improve my teaching aids. In 1998 I introduced six interactive lectures on to the www.

I have also introduced three new courses:

  • Introduction to Microbiology: In 1998, I introduced a new first year course Introduction to Microbiology and in this coming year the course will be increased from 12 to 24 lectures due to demand. The course always has more than 170 students and is popular.
  • Bio-Exploitation of Fungi: In 2000 I introduced a new course Bio-Exploitation of Fungi in keeping with the push for biotechnology in Hong Kong and this course had 175 students in its 1st year. The course was very popular but because of changes in the first year curriculum the lectures will now be incorporated in Applied Microbiology.
  • Fungal Diversity was introduced in 1996 and was popular with third year students. I prepared components of the new Science for non Science Students course in the first year curriculum.
I also teach on the following courses:
  • Applied Microbiology, twelve second year lectures in Industrial Microbiology, Food Microbiology and Medical Microbiology. This course attracts large numbers (50+) of students and I have received good feedback from the students. In 1998 three interative computer based lectures will be placed on the www.
  • Environmental Microbiology, twelve second year lectures. This course also attracts large numbers (50+) of students and I have also received good feedback from the students. In 1998 three interactive computer based lectures will be placed on the www.
The above illustrates that I am very aware of my teaching responsibilities and strive to change my courses and up date my lectures regularly. My student assessment results have also been very good. My aim over the next two years is to prepare all new and existing lectures as power point presentations. Student supervision

Director, Centre for Research in Fungal Diversity

In 1998, I obtained outside funds and matching university funds (from the Vice Chancellors support of new initiatives) to develop the Centre for Research in Fungal Diversity that was formally recognized as a Centre in the University in April 2000. The Centre is part of the Development Plan of the Department of Ecology and Biodiversity and its objectives are:

  1. To act as a regional centre for identification of fungi throughout China, South East Asia and Australasia.
  2. To act as a regional centre for training of mycologists throughout China, South East Asia and Australasia.
  3. To house a regional herbarium and culture collection for the South China and the South East Asian region.
  4. To act as a centre for bioprospecting in the South China region.
  5. To act as a centre for collaboration for research in fungal diversity, throughout the region and further afield, and.
  6. To act as a centre for fungal molecular systematics in China and South East Asia.
As Director of this Centre I am responsible for overseeing that the aims of the Centre are met. With more than 15 staff at times and numerous visitors from the Asian region this has proved a challenging, but time consuming administrative task. The Centre has developed into a world renowned mycology venue, has trained numerous students, publishes many articles and books, and has its own journals and book series in the Fungal Diversity Press. In July 2000 the Centre, with me as Chair, hosted an International Conference at Hong Kong University. The University of Hong Kong Culture Collection

In 1999 I received funding to develop an Industrial Culture Collection for Hong Kong at Hong Kong University. I am Head of the Culture Collection which has more than 8000 fungal strains, and is internationally registered. The culture collection is initiating biotechnological projects and collaborations with industry. Community Service

In 1997 the Mycological Association of Hong Kong was inaugurated and I am Chairman of this organization. I have also been external examiner for students at The Chinese University and City University.
