Overview
Main identification features Head and body moderately compressed; head profile curved; head arched and rounded between eyes; eyes large, more than 1/2 eye diameter below the nearest part of the upper head profile; mouth at front, strongly oblique; tail deeply concave; tail base without a keel; pectoral low on body, long, reaches well past front lobe of anal fin; pelvics small, inserted just before pectoral base; scales large (34-38) and spiny, about 5 rows along the flank are ridged; dorsal & anal fins scaly and with long sickle-shaped front lobes in adults; dorsal fin 33-37, anal fin 26-28; adults without lateral line; small curved canine teeth in bands on both jaws.

Color: Black, rear margin of tail fin, outer edges of soft dorsal and anal, and tips of pelvics white.

Reaches 91.4 cm

Lives in the water column near the bottom at the edge of the continental shelf.

Depth range 50-360m

An Indo-Pacific species collected in the SW Gulf of California and also known from California to central Baja.

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 33-37; Anal spines : 0; Anal soft rays : 26 - 28; Vertebrae : 44 - 46. Body covered with large hard scales, each with a spine. Anterior lobes of dorsal and anal fins high, but changing in shape and height with growth; both fins covered with scales, not depressible in a groove. There are no areas without scales above nor behind the eye. Adults without a lateral line. Attains 60 cm SL.
