Overview
Main identification features
  • arched and rounded between eyes
  • dorsal and anal fins- long pointed front lobes
  • scales large, 5 rows on flank with ridges
TARACTICHTHYS

POMFRETS

Head and body moderately compressed; head profile curved; head arched and rounded between eyes; eyes large, more than 1/2 eye diameter below the nearest part of the upper head profile; mouth at front, strongly oblique; tail deeply concave; tail base without a keel; pectoral low on body, long, reaches well past front lobe of anal fin; pelvics small, inserted just before pectoral base; scales large (34-46), about 5 rows along the flank are ridged; dorsal & anal fins scaly and with long sickle-shaped front lobes in adults; adults without lateral line; small curved canine teeth in bands on both jaws.

A circumglobal genus with 2 species; one Indo-Pacific species enters the northern fringe of our region.
