Described using the synonymous name: Andrena fuscipennis LaBerge & Bouseman

This colorful bee from Texas is closely related to A. perplexa Smith. The female of fuscipennis has a labrum with a subapical, transverse, shiny sulcus crossed by a single strong median crista, unlike that of either perplexa or subaustralis. The propodeal corbicula of the female has long plumose hairs anteriorly as in wilmattae but unlike wilmattae. The female of fuscipennis is also characterized by the deeply infumate wings. The male of fuscipennis is characterized by a short first flagellar segment (no longer 1 than second segment) and a simple sixth sternum without a ; median groove. Both sexes have punctate terga similar to wilmattae.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 3; length, 12.5 mm; width, 3.5 mm; wing length, 4.95-5.15 mm (type 5.15); FL/FW, 0.92-0.94 (type 0.94); FOVL/FOVW, 3.50-3.52 (type 3.52).

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible, labral base and apical margin clypeus rufescent; flagellum dark brown below; tegulae hyaline, orange; wing veins deep brown, membrane deeply infumate, brown; tarsi and tibiae rufescent.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape length equals first three and one-half flagellar segments; flagellar segment 1 shorter than segments 2 plus 3, 2 equal in length to 3 and shorter than 4, 2 and 3 each about as long as broad. Eye, malar space, mandible and galea as in perplexa. Maxillary palpus as in perplexa but ratio about 0.8: 1.0:0.8:0.8:0.7:0.7. Labial palpus as in perplexa but ratio about 1.0:0.8:0.6:0.6. Labral process entire, three to four times as broad at base as long, slightly thickened apically; labrum below process with subapical, transverse, shiny sulcus crossed by a single strong median crista, laterally a few extremely feeble, incomplete rugulae present basally. Clypeus as in perplexa but median longitudinal impunctate line complete. Supraclypeal area, genal area, face above antennae and vertex as in perplexa.

Pronotum as in wilmattae but humeral angle even less distinct. Mesoscutum and scutellum punctate as in perplexa but punctures smaller and deeper, surface finely reticularly shagreened, scutellum shiny. Propodeum and mesepisternum as in perplexa. Wing veins as in perplexa but second submarginal cell slightly shorter. Tergal sculpture as in wilmattae. Sternal and pygidial plate as in perplexa.

VESTITURE. — Generally ochraceous but dark ochraceous to fox-red (holotype) on vertex and thoracic dorsum. Terga without trace of apical fasciae. Pollen-collecting hairs as in perplexa.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 2; length, about 9 mm; width, about 3 mm; wing length, 4.13-4.33 (type); FL/FW, 0.87-0.88 (type); FS1/FS2, 1.00.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical half rufescent; flagellum dark reddish-brown below; tegulae hyaline, yellow; wing veins dark reddish-brown, membrane slightly infumate anteriorly; tarsi and apical halves middle and hind tibiae dark rufescent.

STRUCTURE. — Antennae moderately long, in repose extending back to posterior margin mesoscutum; scape length equals about first two and one-half flagellar segments, flagellar segment 2 slightly shorter than 3 and longer than broad. Eye about three and one-half times as long as broad, inner margins diverging toward mandibles. Malar space, mandible and galea as in perplexa. Maxillary palpus as in perplexa but segmental ratio about 1.0:1.0:0.9:0.8:0.7:0.7. Labial palpus as in perplexa but ratio about 1.0:0.6:0.5:0.5. Labral process twice as broad at base as long, shallowly emarginate, curved, shiny, without median longitudinal sulcus; crista absent. Clypeus, face, genal area and vertex as in perplexa.

Pronotum as in perplexa but humeral angle lobe set closer to mesonotum much as in wilmattae. Thoracic sculpturing as in perplexa. Wing venation as in female. Terga 1-4 each with basal area and basal half of apical area punctate, punctures separated mostly by two puncture widths (slightly more on basal area tergum 1 and slightly less on basal areas terga 2 and 3), surfaces shiny, basal areas slightly dulled by extremely fine shagreening, apical areas finely tessellate. Sterna as in perplexa but sternum 6 lacking median shallow sulcus.

Terminalia as figured (Figs. 21-25) but note the following: gonocoxite with apical process with abundant hairs; shape of volsellae; sternum 7 with apical lobes broad, with somewhat flattened apical margins; sternum 8 similar to that of perplexa but more broadly expanded at tip and shorter.

VESTITURE. — Pale ochraceous to slightly darker on vertex and thoracic dorsum. Generally as in perplexa.
