This moderate-sized bee is extremely difficult to separate from knuthiana, especially in the male sex. It is also similar to medionitens and certain variants of vierecki are difficult to separate from some variants of medionitens in either sex. In general, vierecki is similar to knuthiana in the coarse clypeal punctures (especially in the females) and the interrupted tergal bands of terga 3 and 4. It differs from knuthiana in the color of the vestiture which is usually ochraceous to yellow and in the last two terga of either sex having pale hairs. The clypeal punctation will usually separate vierecki females from those of medionitens. In addition, both sexes of vierecki have the tergal band of tergum 3 interrupted medially, the tergal band of tergum 4 usually interrupted medially, and have long thoracic and tergal vestiture in general.

FEMALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 8-10 mm; width, 2.5-3.0 mm; wing length, M = 3.40 ± 0.110 mm; FL/FW, M = 0.99 ± 0.005; FOVL/FOVW, M = 3.23 ± 0.069.

INTEGUMENTAL COLOR. — Black except as follows: mandible with apical third to half rufescent; flagellum below brown to reddish-brown; tegula dark reddish-brown, translucent; wing veins and pterostigma reddish-brown to red, membrane hyaline, slightly infumate especially apically; terga and sterna narrowly hyaline apically; tarsi dark brown to reddish-brown, rarely red.

STRUCTURE. — Antennal scape equals about first three and one-half flagella segments in length; flagellar segment 1 about as long as segments 2 plus 3 plus one-fourth of 4; segment 2 about as long as 3, broader than long, shorter than 4, segments 4-9 about as long as broad. Eyes each about three and three-fourths times as long as broad, inner margins parallel or converging slightly towards mandibles. Malar space, mandible and galea as in medionitens, Maxillary palpus as in medionitens but segmental ratio about as 1.0:1.0:1.0:1.0:0.9:0.7. Labial palpus as in medionitens but ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.7:0.7. Labral process weakly bidentate, labrum below process as in medionitens. Clypeus as in medionitens but punctures larger, each puncture usually depressing surrounding integument except basally where small, median impunctate line usually present. Supraclypeal area dull, finely shagreened, with minute but distinct punctures. Genal area vertex, face and fovea as in medionitens.

Pronotum as in medionitens. Mesoscutum usually with coarse reticular shagreening throughout, rarely shiny posteromedially; punctures small sparse, in anterior 'third separated by one and one-half to two puncture widths. Scutellum similar but usually shiny in small median area. Propodeum and mesepisternum as in medionitens. Wing venation and vannal lobe hind wing as in medionitens.

Metasomal terga and sterna sculptured as in medionitens but shagreening usually somewhat coarser. Pygidial plate as in medionitens.

VESTITURE. — Generally ochraceous to yellow or bright ochraceous, dorsum of thorax often dark ochraceous, except as follows: upper half of fovea usually brown (rarely all pale and rarely entirely brown); vertex occasionally with brown hairs; mesoscutum posteromedially and scutellum medially rarely with brown hairs mixed with pale; terga 2 and 3 with apical pale fasciae interrupted medially; tergum 4 with apical pale fascia usually narrowly interrupted medially; terga 5 and 6 golden-brown to ochraceous, rarely dark brown medially; sternal hairs pale; hind tibiae and basitarsi pale, ochraceous. Vestiture generally long, especially on dorsum of thorax and tergal apical fasciae consisting of exceptionally long decumbent hair Pollen-collecting hairs normal.

MALE. MEASUREMENTS AND RATIOS. — N = 20; length, 8-9 mm; width 1.5-2.5 mm; wing length, M = 3.19 ± 0.132 mm; FL/FW, M = 1.02 ± 0.007; FS1/FS2, M = 1.03 ± 0.021.

STRUCTURE. — Antenna, moderately long, in repose usually reaching to propodeum; scape length equals first two flagellar segments or slightly less flagellar segment 1 about as long as 2 or slightly longer, shorter than 3, segments 4-6 about one and one-third to one and one-half times as long as broad. Eyes each three and one-fourth times as long as broad or slightly less, inner margins converging towards mandibles. Malar space, mandible and galea as in female. Maxillary palpus as in medionitens but segmental ratio about as 1.0:0.9:0.9:0.9:0.7:0.7. Labial palpus as in medionitens but ratio about as 1.0:0.7:0.6:0.6. Labral process and labrum as in medionitens. Clypeus as in medionitens but punctures often slightly larger. Supraclypeal area, genal area, face and vertex as in female.

Thoracic sculpturing as in female except as follows: mesoscutum and scutellum usually dulled by fine reticulotransverse shagreening, punctures sparse and small; propodeum with dorsal area usually more granular.

Metasomal sculpturing as in female but tergal apical areas often shinier and sternal punctures sparse. Sternum 6 flat, emarginate apically. Terminalia as in Figures 57-61.

VESTITURE. — Generally pale ochraceous to yellow as in female except as follows: head with abundant dark hairs on vertex along inner and outer margins eyes and occasionally on clypeus; mesoscutum and scutellum often with dark brown hairs mixed with pale medially; terga 2-4 with apical pale fasciae usually restricted to small lateral patches of long decumbent hairs; tergum 5 with fascia absent or extremely weak and interrupted medially sternal hairs much as in w-scripta.
