Main identification features
  • tail fin ~symmetric, base with keel
  • very large mouth
  • 5 extremely long gill slits
CETORHINUS

BASKING SHARKS

Stout body; pointed snout; large mouth; 5 very long gill slits that extend onto the top and bottom of the body, all before the pectoral; long, hair like gill rakers; teeth numerous, minute, hooked; tail a nearly symmetrical half-moon; tail base depressed, with long, strong keel; 2 dorsal fins, the first midway between the pectorals and pelvics.

Cetorhinus has a single species, which occurs circumglobally in subtropical to temperate waters and which extends into the fringes of the tropical eastern Pacific.
