Main identification features
- no fatty eyelid
- lips thick, with papillae; lower lip folded down
- teeth on lips, long stems, tips notched
- scales very rough
CHAENOMUGIL
MULLETS
Both lips thick and fleshy; adults without fatty eyelid; nostrils very close together; distance between rear and front nostrils equal to length of rear, slit-like nostril; bone below front of eye with serrated lower margin; tip of lower jaw without central knob; jaw teeth in bands, outer edges of lips with teeth; teeth small, slender, with forked, curved tips and long stems; anal fin III spines, 10-11 rays; scales rough.
Two species in this tropical genus, one endemic to our region and one found in the Central Pacific.
