Overview
Main identification features Mouth short, very oblique; dorsal rays IV+I, 8; anal rays III, 10; eye without covering of fatty (adipose) tissue; lips thick; a band of soft pavement-like papillae on each lip, lower lip folded down; teeth on lips, strongly bifid, with long stems; pectoral fin about 80% of head length; tail fin concave; scales very rough; lateral scales 42-44, second dorsal and anal densely scaled.

Greenish or olive on back, silvery on sides, and white below; faint brownish stripes corresponding with scale rows on side.

Size: grows to 22 cm.

Habitat: occurs along rocky shorelines, also in tide pools.

Depth: 0-10 m.

Southern Baja to the central Gulf of California to Peru, and all the offshore islands except Malpelo.
