Overview
Sporocarps short-stalked, rarely sessile or forming short plasmodiocarps, hemispherical, resembling egg-cups, up to 1 mm high and wide, sessile sporocarps up to 0.5 mm diam. and plasmodiocarps up to 4 mm long, white or pale ochraceous. Hypothallus forming a narrow rim around the base of the sporocarp. Stalk thick, calcareous, grooved, ochraceous. Peridium double, domed, the outer layer an egg-shell crust of compacted crystals, the inner layer membranous. Dehiscence circumscissile, allowing the peridium to fall off as a lid, leaving a cup-like base. Columella hemispherical, large, ochraceous to pale red. Capillitium radiating from the columella, consisting of rigid, sparingly branched threads, hyaline or lilac- or yellow-brown, with a few swellings containing calcareous deposits. Spore-mass black. Spores dark purple-brown, with a pale area, 9-12 µm diam., with large, dark, widely spaced warts. Plasmodium yellow. On straw, grass litter and thatch. Common on desert cacti.
