Identification
This is the common black ant that enters houses and attacks any sweet food left exposed. It is also commonly found within the bunches of the popular Philippine fruit lansones.

Widespread throughout the Philippines.

Natural history
It tends mealybugs and coccids associated with many plants. It is active day and night, foraging on the foliage or on the ground. It is adapted to disturbed conditions, even urban locations.

How to encounter
Look for ant trails on branches and on the ground. Beat low vegetation over a white sheet. Bait with cookie crumbs or tuna flakes.
