Overview
Sporocarps scattered to loosely clustered, often in large colonies, short-stalked or rarely sessile. Sporothecae globose to ovoid, 0.7-1.5 mm diam. Stalk shiny black, rigid, usually cylindrical, sometimes distinctly flattened, less than 1 mm long. Peridium membranous, thin, persistent, firmly attached to the capillitial tips, splitting irregularly into large flakes, blue or green, strongly iridescent, mottled, especially towards the base, with numerous depressed, dark brown areas. Hypothallus thick, opaque and black at the centre, transparent and reddish brown at the margins, discoid, but confluent in clustered sporocarps, marked with distinct tubules radiating from the base of the stipe. Columella dark reddish brown to black, rigid, usually tapered upwards, sometimes branched at the apex, usually 50% of the sporotheca height. Capillitium dense, branched and anastomosed to form a rigid, flexuose net with numerous free ends, reddish brown, hyaline at the extreme tips, arising from the upper fifth of the columella, the axils not expanded. Spore-mass black. Spores dark purple-brown, often distinctly paler on one side, 12-15 µm diam., densely and evenly spinulose, spines < 0.5 µm long. Plasmodium unknown.
