MEMBRAS

SILVERSIDES

Slender, elongate, compressed; snout longer than eye, top with 4 depressions; top of mouth extendible; teeth well developed, in bands; sensory pits on top of head; first dorsal V-VI spines, origin well before origin of anal; pelvics inserted nearer anal origin than top corner of pectoral base; anus notably before anal fin (1/4 distance between anal and pelvics), but behind tips of pelvics; dorsal fin scaleless; front of anal fin with scaly sheath.

A neotropical genus with 6 species; 1 in and endemic to our region.
