Metatrichia horrida
Overview
Sporocarps sub-stipitate or sessile, obconical or subcylindrical, often densely crowded and then angular from mutual pressure, firmly united into pseudoaethalia composed of usually 200 or more sporocarps, each 0.4-0.9 mm in height and 0.4-0.5 mm diam., dark purplish red. Hypothallus confluent, reddish orange. Peridium opaque, firm, shining, with metallic reflections. Dehiscence by a preformed flattened pulvinate lid, sunken within a raised marginal rim. Capillitium of very long free elaters, which are often recurved with the two halves coiled about each other, 5-6 µm diam., the tips bluntly shortened and usually terminating in a short spine, ornamented with 3-4 spiral bands bearing conspicuous spines 2-4 long, deep orange-red in the mass. Spore-mass orange-red. Spores reddish ochraceous, nearly smooth or with a few minute spines, 9.5-11 µm diam. Plasmodium probably red or reddish.
