Brewer's mitrewort

Pectiantia breweri (A. Gray) Rydberg

Plants not stoloniferous. Flowering stems 8-25(-40) cm. Leaves: petiole 1.5-7.5 (-12) cm, subglabrous or short stipitate-glandular and sparsely long stipitate-glandular, longer hairs spreading, reddish brown; blade broadly cordate to reniform, usually shorter than, sometimes ± as long as wide, 1.5-7.9 × 1.5-11 cm, margins shallowly 7-, 9-, or 11-lobed, singly or doubly crenate-dentate, glabrous or irregularly ciliate, apex of terminal lobe rounded, surfaces glabrous or sparsely short stipitate-glandular and sparsely long stipitate-glandular; cauline leaves absent. Inflorescences 1-2, densely (6-)20-40(-60)-flowered, 1-2(-3) flowers per node, not secund, 8-25(-40) cm, glabrous or sparsely arachnoid-pilose proximally, glandular-puberulent distally. Pedicels 1-2 mm, short stipitate-glandular. Flowers: hypanthium broadly saucer-shaped, 0.8-1.6 × 2.5-3.5 mm; sepals spreading, yellowish green or greenish, triangular to broadly triangular, 0.7-1 × 0.9-1.9 mm; petals greenish yellow or greenish, (4-)7-11-lobed, 1.5-2 mm, lobes linear, lateral lobes spreading; stamens 5, opposite sepals; filaments white or greenish, 0.1-0.2 mm; anthers 0.1-0.2 × 0.2-0.5 mm; ovary nearly completely inferior; styles divergent, flattened, 0.1-0.2 mm; stigmas 2-lobed. Seeds dark reddish brown or blackish, 0.8-1.2 mm, pitted. 2 n = 14.

Flowering May-Sep. Moist forests, glades, stream banks, meadows, open to wooded mountain slopes; 500-3500 m; Alta., B.C.; Calif., Idaho, Mont., Nev., Oreg., Wash.
