Overview
Main identification features
  • crest between eyes; snout: 2 spines, 1 points back
  • back - 9-12 dark bars; front dorsal fin white
OTOPHIDIUM

CUSK-EELS

Body relatively short, compressed, tapering to rear; eye large; between eyes with thin crest under skin, leading to 2 compressed spines on snout, one pointing forward, the other backward; mouth large, under slightly overhanging snout; opercle with sharp, partly hidden spine; dorsal and anal fins confluent with pointed tail fin; each pelvic fin with 2 unequal rays, inserted under eye; scales small, rounded, in regular rows, more or less overlapping, none on head.

The genus, with 4 species, is restricted to the neotropics. A single, endemic species occurs in the tropical eastern Pacific.
