FishBase 1 thumbnail  •  slide show español Overview Main identification features use genus Dorsal rays about 110-120; anal rays about 85-90; snout with 2 spines, 1 pointing back; a crest between eyes; scales small and rounded in regular rows, more or less overlapping; scales absent on head; body elongate and compressed, the greatest depth about 5.6-6.0 in standard length; origin of dorsal fin over middle of pectoral fins; pelvic fins inserted below eye, each consisting of two filamentous rays joined basally; dorsal and anal fins confluent, tail pointed; lateral line on most of body. Greyish to silvery white; about 9-12 dusky dark bars on upper half of side; margin of anterior dorsal and anal rays white. Size: to at least 12 cm. Inhabits sandy bottoms. Depth: 5-90 m. The southern tip of Baja California and the mouth of the Gulf of California to northern Peru, Cocos and the Galapagos. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed.
