SARDINOPS
SARDINES, PILCHARDS
Elongate, cylindrical; lower part of gill cover with bony ridges radiating downwards; mouth at front; dorsal fin at about midbody; pelvics under rear of dorsal; anal fin short with base (<20 rays), origin well behind dorsal.
A circumglobal genus that occurs on subtropical and temperate areas, except for western Atlantic. There is one subtropical species, two of which are endemic to the eastern Pacific.
