Main identification features
  • oblong, robust;uniform brown
  • 1 dorsal fin xi-xii, spines low, strong notch
  • tail fin straight
  • teeth small
  • operculum: 2 flat spines

STEREOLEPIS

GIANT SEABASSES

Body robust, oblong; mouth large, with small teeth; preopercle weakly serrated; 2 flat blunt spines at angle of operculum; one strongly notched dorsal fin, with XI-XII spines, 9-10 rays, base of spiny part longer than base of soft part; scales rough, small, cover body and head except snout, jaws and between eyes; tail straight, with rounded tips.

This genus, with 2 species, is found in the temperate northeast and northwest Pacific; the eastern Pacific species enters our region.
