Overview
Main identification features
  • head: sucker passes pectoral, 17-20 plates
  • uniform brown
Marlinsucker

Body elongate; dorsal and anal bases <2X head length; head disc long, reaches beyond pectorals, but less than 1/2 body length, 17-20 rows of plates; pectoral medium, blunt; dorsal and anal bases similar length, almost 2X head length; dorsal 21-27 rays, anal 20-26 rays; tail edge straight (forked in juvenile); pelvics pointed.

Overall brown.

Size: 40 cm.

Habitat: oceanic, hosts are billfishes.

Depth: 0-200 m?.

Circumtropical; throughout our region except for the upper Gulf of California.

Climate Zone: North Temperate (Californian Province &/or Northern Gulf of California); Northern Subtropical (Cortez Province + Sinaloan Gap); Northern Tropical (Mexican Province to Nicaragua + Revillagigedos); Equatorial (Costa Rica to Ecuador + Galapagos, Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo); South Temperate (Peruvian Province ).

Diet: bony fishes; Pelagic crustacea; zooplankton; ectoparasites; pelagic fish larvae.

Eastern Pacific Range: Northern limit=33; Southern limit=-9; Western limit=-118; Eastern limit=-78; Latitudinal range=42; Longitudinal range=40.

Egg Type: Pelagic; Pelagic larva.

Feeding Group: Carnivore; Ectoparasite cleaner; Planktivore.
