Overview
Main identification features
  • body tan;fins dark
  • dorsal fin and a: front low
  • snout short, round
  • mouth ends mid-pupil
  • gill rakers 30-34
Snout short, rounded; mouth ends under center of pupil; dorsal rays VII+I,31-35; anal rays II (reduced or embedded in large fish) + I,20-22; gill rakers on first arch (excluding rudiments) 30-34 (9-11 + 21-23); lateral line with slight arch over pectoral region; no scutes; pectoral short; grooves present on dorsal and ventral surface of tail fin base, but no lateral fleshy keel.

Olivaceous to bluish on back, sides silvery to slightly bronzy; fins somewhat dusky; no bars or stripe on head or body.

Size: reaches at least 73 cm, common to 40 cm.

Habitat: coastal pelagic and demersal.

Depth: 0-30 m.

The lower half of the Gulf of California to Peru, including the Galapagos.
