Physarum mutabile
Overview
Sporocarps stalked, but sometimes sessile or forming long plasmodiocarps. Sporthecae subglobose to erect-ovoid or cylindrical, 0.3-0.6 mm diam., usually white, weathering to yellowish grey. Peridium thin, wrinkled, bearing uniform, sometimes squamulose, lime deposits. Stalk, when present, yellow or brownish, usually enclosing lime, especially at the base, sometimes limeless. Hypothallus white or ochraceous. Capillitium intricate, persistent, somewhat elastic, the nodes white, varying in size, in the stalked forms tending to form a central, often cylindrical, pseudocolumella, sometimes with large crystalline nodules in the centre. Spore-mass black. Spores purplish brown, spinulose, 8-10 µm diam. Plasmodium watery grey.
