ATHERINOMORUS

SILVERSIDES

Eye large (>snout length); head relatively deep, with bony knob on top, top profile straight; upper jaw not extendible, with straight top, with front (premaxilla) bone extending past front edge of eye; lower lip with small, outward pointing teeth; projection at rear of lower jaw inside mouth small; gill rakers long, slender; preopercle with distinct notch on front border; 1st dorsal origin well before anal origin, behind pectoral origin & above or behind tips of pelvics; V spines on first dorsal fin; pelvics inserted closer to pectoral base than anal fin origin; scales vertically elongate; bases of dorsal, anal & pectoral fin rays with scales; large scales under pectoral base & on operculum

This tropical genus, with 11 species, occurs in the tropical west Atlantic and Indian Ocean as well as our region, where a single, endemic species is found.
