Australian Museum

The Australian Museum (Sydney) is Australia's first public natural history museum established in 1827, with environmental and anthropological collections from both Australia and the Pacific. Today the Australian Museum is a leading public cultural institution with dual roles in education and research and its work encompasses scientific research, collections management, exhibitions and education.

The museum contains over 18 million objects both scientific and cultural and is a leading research institution in Australia for taxonomic research of both terrestrial and marine fauna. Exhibitions and public programs inform visitors and display the museum's collections of unique animal life and cultures of Australia and the Pacific.

The Entomology collection at the Australian Museum began in the 1860's and holds over 5 million specimens. The collections are used broadly and not just by entomologists but also artists, photographers, quarantine agencies, and other research scientists, for example in climate change studies.
