National Agricultural Insect Collection (NAIC)

THE PNG National Agricultural Insect Collection (NAIC) is managed by the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) and is housed at Kilakila, Port Moresby. NAIC is the largest insect collection in Papua New Guinea with an estimated 2-300,000 specimens and with a focus on pest species of agricultural importance. Support and management of the collection has been undertaken over the years through the assistance of different international organisations (including AusAid and the German Development Service) and it is hoped that ongoing funding may be secured for the preservation, management and enhancement of these collections. This biodiversity capacity building project has been assisting NARI in building expertise and providing guidance and planning in order that NAIC be managed sustainably into the future as a working collection, supporting primary industries, border protection and natural resource management and conservation as well as being a repository of Papua New Guinea's insect biodiversity and an agricultural insect pest reference collection accessible to the nation.
